Synopsis:

They’re at it again! Why can’t those Greek gods behave? It’s Percy and Annabeth’s job to save Camp Half-Blood (and the rest of the world, too) from the squabbles of the Mount Olympus crew. This time Percy’s got a new and embarrassing brother and he’s crashing a new and dangerous quest into the Sea of Monsters.

Chatter:

(Spoiler Alerts! ) The Sea of Monsters is entertaining, but mostly serves to move the plot forward and set up the rest of the series. It seems like the whole point of the book occurs on the last two pages: with the arrival of Thalia.

I’m much more excited about the third book (The Titan’s Curse) than I was excited by this book. I’m intrigued by the relationship that will exist between Thalia and Percy – will they get along, or hate each other? I’m hoping for a love/ hate relationship.

I also wonder what path Annabeth will take? We know she has a crush on Luke, and we also know from the Sirens’ song that she is very much tempted by Luke’s vision of the future… a future that she could have a huge part in building. Will she give in to this temptation?

I’m also struck by the similarities between this plot and Harry Potter – did anyone else notice this?

  1. The prophecy that could be about two different people
  2. The way Kronos is returning from the dead/ regrowing a body
  3. The wise female sidekick (Annabeth = Hermione, anyone?)
  4. The goofy male sidekick (Ron/ Grover)
  5. Even Chiron has some Dumbledore-like qualities.

Questions:

Do you agree with the way that Annabeth and the others treat Tyson?

Do you think Percy and Thalia will be the best of friends or the worst of enemies?

What do you think the “big three hero” prophecy says?

Do you see any more similarities with Harry Potter?

I think that this is like Harry Potter but with more connection to the real world. I think that Tyson was a very funny and pure character. I don't think it was fair how the others treated him. I also think that , as great of a hero he was, Percy should have been as confident as Tyson's friend and as Tyson's brother. I think Percy and Thalia will be friends but have many differences. Almost like Annabeth and Percy, just in a different way. This book is AWSOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't agree with everyone reating Tyson poorly because he never did anything to them. He was just trying to help along the trip. Happy Reading!

I disagree with how Annabeth and the others for treating Tyson so badly because he is son of Poseidon just like Percy, and besides his size, he’s no different then anyone else. Annabeth had a bad experience with another Cyclops in the past, when she, Thalia, and Luke were almost killed, but Tyson saved them in the beginning of the book from a monster. Also, Tyson risked his life for Annabeth and Percy when their ship was going to sink in the sea of monsters. I agree with Annabeth for apologizing to Tyson at the end of the book.

I don't agree with the others for treating Tyson so poorly because he can't help how he was born. He does not act monstorous or destroy anything. Why isn't he held to the same standars as everyone else? In the beginning of the book, I disagreed with Percy being ashamed of Tyson being his brother. Why was Percy content on being his friend, but then embarrased by him when he found out he was his half- brother? It didn't make sense to me.

I really enjoyed both The Lightning Thief and The Sea of Monsters. I can't wait to read The Titan's Curse. I agree, there are some similarities to the Harry Potter series.
