Meyer instantly throws a curve ball by separating Edward and Bella. Bella, of course is devastated but soon finds comfort in an old friend, Jacob. Jacob, mentioned briefly in Twilight is a great new addition to this series adding stark contrast to Edward's character. Bella is confused when Jacob wants more then just friendship because she is torn between the love she still has for Eward and the hurt she feels as a result of his leaving her so abruptly. Meyer expands Bella's and Edward's characters finally giving Bella an opportunity to save Edward at the end of the book.
I was devastated when Meyer made the decision to separate the two main characters. I actually cried during some parts when Bella was describing the pain she was suffering. However, for Bella to think that Edward didn't love her anymore was rather hard to understand after all they had been through in Twilight.
I loved Jacob and was thrilled he had such a huge role in this book. He added humor and light to Bella's life while Edward was gone. The comparison to Edward was rather obvious, and at times I thought that Bella was leading Jacob on. Jacob definitely got the short end of the stick in that relationship. Bella leaned on him when Edward left her but as soon as Edward was back in her life he became the main focus again and Jacob took the backseat.
The introduction of the Volturi added some interesting history and a new villain for the Cullen's to contend with. The new twist was that this time it was Bella who was able to do the saving. Her method of saving compromised her friendship with Jacob and her life. She made a promise that even Edward was opposed to but he came up with a compromise – marriage. I was terribly surprised by Bella's reaction to Edward's proposal. You would think a girl willing to spend her eternal life with someone would love to get married and wouldn't care what other people might think.
Meyer is constantly surprising me and I am eager to read the next two books. I have many theories about the life that Bella and Edward will share but I am sure that there will be twists along the way.
