An awkward teen moves from her home in Phoenix to live with her dad in a little town in Washington. It rains all the time. At first Bella Swan is hoping just to survive the school year but suddenly finds herself intrigued by an unusual boy in her class, Edward Cullen. He too becomes fascinated with her and they quickly fall in love even though there is a huge difference between them. Edward is a vampire.
This book was recommended to me months before I actually read it; I was stalling because of the vampire characters. I am not one for horror stories or creatures that are known to be the center of horror stories. So reading this book was not something I intended on. The person who recommended this book to me reassured me that it was more about love and that it was not frightening at all. As it turns out, it was one of the most romantic stories I have ever read!
Edward being from an earlier time seemed to make him more of a gentleman and much more romantic. Bella and Edward would have these wonderful chats where they seemed to connect even though on the surface it seemed that they didn't have much in common. Meyer did a good job juxtaposing the two characters; where one was clumsy, one was graceful, one always in need of saving, the other was the saver.
Meyer is able to add suspenseful chase and fight scenes along side a blossoming romance. Bella seems very eager to continue her life with Edward – their eternal life as vampires. While Edward is eager to preserve her innocent soul. I am interested to see how Meyer handles all of the challenges the two will face.
